Dr Ira Ktena

Ira is a Research Scientist in the AI research team, working on AI advances that can unlock immense potential in different scientific disciplines, primarily health and medical science.

She was previously a Staff Research Scientist at Google DeepMind focusing on foundation models for healthcare and cell biology, generative modelling, model robustness, as well as language and multimodal evaluations of large models. Prior to that she worked in other industrial research labs at Twitter and Spotify, where she focused on a wide range of research areas from audio generative modelling to algorithmic transparency and accountability. Her research has been featured by The Economist and The BBC.

Ira completed a PhD in Computer Science at Imperial College London. During her PhD, she was awarded an EMBO short-term fellowship supporting a research visit at Harvard Medical School and the Stroke Group at Massachusetts General Hospital to translate her research.

Dancing and music are a constant source of joy in her life, with her most recent passion being Argentinian tango. Ira is excited to contribute to EIT's ambitious goal of solving humanity’s most enduring challenges, while she is constantly striving to foster diversity in STEM disciplines through mentoring and other initiatives.
