David Canning

Principal Economist (Consultant) - Economics

David Canning is a Principal Economist (Consultant) to the Economics platform at EIT. He is a Professor of Economics and International Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

His research has focused on the role of improvements in health and changes in demography on economic growth. He works on the intersection of demography, epidemiology, and economics, studying both the mechanisms behind demographic change and health improvements, and their effects on economic performance. He has worked both at the macroeconomic level, looking at the role of the demographic dividend in economic growth and at the microeconomic level using randomized controlled trials to study the long term economic effects of health interventions.

David has previously held positions at the London School of Economics, Cambridge University, Columbia University, and Queen’s University Belfast. He has been an advisor to the World Health Organization, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank.

He has a BA from Queen’s University Belfast and a PhD from Cambridge University.
